4 countries perfect for a beginner's interrail

Want to experience the best Europe has to offer in the real authentic way? Do you like scenic breathtaking views and want a flexible mode of transportation? Then look no further, you should try interrailing in Europe!

I have travelled a lot by train, in 2023 alone I visited 16 countries and managed to do 5 interrails across Europe. And here are the countries I would go interrailing in if I were a beginner.

Interrailing across Europe is an exciting adventure, offering the freedom to explore diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and historic cities by train. For beginners, starting with countries that are easy to navigate and offer a mix of urban and scenic experiences is key. Here are four ideal countries for Interrail beginners, plus a bonus guide with essential tips for first-time travellers.

But first, what is interrail?

Interrail is an all-you-can-travel-ticket for train travel in Europe. It offers unlimited train travel during an amount of travel days (4, 5, 7, 10 or 15) within a set period (1 or 2 months) across participating European countries. It's an ideal option for travellers who want flexibility, a fixed price and the freedom to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of booking individual tickets for each journey.

Now, let's get into which countries I would recommend going to first if you haven't interrailed before.

Bonus: Essential Tips for Interrail Beginners

7 bonus tips for things to think about as a train beginner. To ensure an even better experience.

1. Plan Your Route, But Stay Flexible

Having a rough itinerary helps, but be open to spontaneous changes and detours. Flexibility allows you to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and experiences.

2. Book in Advance Where Necessary

While the Interrail Pass offers flexibility, some trains, especially high-speed and night trains, require reservations. Book these in advance to secure your spot.

3. Pack Light and Smart

Opt for a comfortable backpack and pack essentials only. Include a travel pillow, a reusable water bottle, snacks, and entertainment for longer journeys. Find some packing advice here.

4. Use Mobile Apps

Apps like Rail Planner (by Interrail) provide offline timetables and train schedules, helping you navigate and plan your journey more efficiently.

6. Understand Seat Reservations

Some trains require seat reservations even with an Interrail Pass. Check the rail planner app to see which trains require seat reservation. It usually says "seat reservations required"

7. Embrace Local Culture

Respect local customs and try to learn a few basic phrases in the local language. This enhances your travel experience and helps you connect with locals.
