Eco-Wanderlust: 11 Ways to make you European travel Adventures more sustainable!

Updated: Jul 26

Traveling sustainably in Europe is both a rewarding and feasible endeavor, thanks to the continent's advanced infrastructure, rich history, and commitment to environmental preservation. Here are some effective ways to ensure your travels through Europe are as green as possible:

1. Opt for Rail Travel

Europe boasts one of the most efficient and extensive rail networks in the world. High-speed trains like the Frecciarossa (Italy), ICE (Germany), X2000 (SJ) and TGV (France) offer quick and scenic routes, often making them competitive with, or even faster than, flying for many destinations. Plus, trains have a much lower carbon footprint compared to planes.

2. Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodations

Many European cities offer eco-friendly accommodation options, from certified green hotels to eco-hostels. These places prioritise sustainability, often incorporating energy-efficient systems, water-saving measures, and waste-reducing initiatives. Sometimes you can even get a discount if you arrive to the hotel by train or bike. Win-win!

3. Bike or Walk

European cities are renowned for their walkability and extensive cycling infrastructure. Biking or walking is not only a green choice but also allows for a more intimate exploration of a city.

4. Utilize Public Transport

Europe's public transportation systems, from buses to trams to subways, are typically efficient and comprehensive. Using them reduces the number of cars on the road and your carbon footprint. Also boats can be a great alternative instead of renting your own car.

5. Limit Air Travel

If you must fly, try to book direct flights, as take-offs and landings are where the most fuel is consumed. Consider offsetting your carbon emissions by investing in carbon offset projects.

6. Eat Local and Seasonal

European cuisine is diverse and regionally unique. Opt for local and seasonal foods, which have a lower environmental impact and support local economies. Farmers' markets are a great place to start, or eating at restaurants with focus on seasonal groceries.

7. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Carry a reusable water bottle, tote bag, and utensils. Europe has high-quality tap water in most places, so refilling is easy. Many cities also have robust recycling systems; make sure to sort your waste accordingly.

8. Respect Nature

If you're venturing into Europe's stunning natural landscapes, stay on designated paths, don't disturb wildlife, and always carry out your trash.

9. Engage in Slow Travel

Rather than rushing from one destination to another, spend more time in fewer places. This not only reduces transportation emissions but also allows for a deeper connection with the local culture and environment. I just spent one month living in Florence, not only did I get to know the city extremely well, but I also had time to discover the region.

10. Support Responsible Operators

Whether you're taking a guided tour, attending an event, or renting equipment, choose providers that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices.

11. Stay Informed

Before visiting, research local sustainability initiatives or customs. This will ensure you're contributing positively to the community and environment during your stay.

Remember, sustainable travel is as much about the journey as the destination. Europe, with its deep history, varied landscapes, and progressive green initiatives, offers countless opportunities to explore in an eco-conscious manner. Every sustainable choice you make contributes to preserving the charm and beauty of this diverse continent for future generations.
